Intro
The GitHub Actions Certification is a go-to credential for developers and DevOps engineers looking to validate their CI/CD skills with GitHub. Launched in 2024, the GitHub Certification program was a welcome move—especially after they slashed their prices from $200 to $99. This exam focuses on practical knowledge—building, consuming, and securing workflows at scale.
In this post, I’ll break down:
✅ Exam structure & key domains
✅ How I prepared (resources, labs, and time investment)
✅ Our Ultimate cheat sheet🔥: Tips to ace it on your first attempt
The exam summary
Length: 2 hours (120 minutes)
Questions: 73–75 multiple-choice questions
Exam format: Multiple-choice exam covering real-world GitHub Actions scenarios
Pass Score: Around 75%
Score per topic: Breakdown provided in the exam report
Exam center: Online proctored via PSI (👉 PSI System Check)
Pass confirmation: Instant after submission
Validity: 3 years
Price: $99 USD
Retake Policy: 24-hour for the first retake ->14 days before the second
Preparation time:
If you have hands-on experience building & maintaining GitHub Actions workflows, you’re in a great spot. Otherwise a focused few weeks of study and labs should be enough. I had to squeeze it in, so I kept it tight (1 week).
Impressions
If you’re rolling GitHub pipelines daily, it’s hard not to be tempted by the cert. So it just made sense to make it official. That being said, some multiple-selection questions were annoyingly confusing. When you’re told to pick 2, but 3 seem equally valid, it definitely leaves room for interpretation.
